[PWP to Thomas Ernaud]

Did you read the paper yet? I am not sure what to do. Someday soon they will catch me at your place.

I have decided that performing in the nude might not be such a bad idea if it helps me stay cool. Between the heat and the lights and the fact none of our venues have enough cache to air condition I'm dying. Then again I risk having to pay fines for public indecency or jail time and I really don't care to experience life on the inside again. Perhaps skimpy lingerie. It cold be a new selling point for the band.

My apple pie? That I bought at the grocery store? That tried and true symbol of your country when combined with hot dogs and red, white, and blue (which my country also shares)? It sadly had synthetic apples (I believe they are made of cornsyrup, thickeners, apple "product" and gelatin) in it. Rather a pathetic reflection.

Happy Fourth of July America.

So I have decided to write a song about the Lonely Lover Lad. It will be called Pamplemousse.

Alas for him, I am off to have dinner with my fabulous lover and his friends.

Bon soir.

Lonely Lover Lad Longing for Luscious Ladies: A girlfriend changes everything: the way things taste, the way things smell. Why don't we stay in tonight and have a candlelight dinner for... well, that's up to you. Call me at 555-2222.

Cam? Really? I wonder what he would do if anyone actually called.

I am sure the Americans are blaming the French for backing this cheese smuggling ring we have heard so much about. Or perhaps the Swiss? It is a terrible crime, non? And I am not talking about the smuggling, no, rather those bland processed oil slices encased in plastic that Americans call cheese. I will say I have had a nice slice of cheddar or two from Vermont, perhaps not all is lost.

It is a shame your government spends so much time detaining foreign nationals who have done nothing wrong and catching people for smuggling in wheels of dairy product instead of solving all the problems you really have.

So in honor of the valorous yet sadly captured cheese smugglers, Les Magnifiques Libellules will perform their new song, Brie tonight at Blitzkrieg in District 2. Two sets, one at nine and one at eleven. You are responsible for your own cheese.

Cut For Video )

This is a video my friend Alain produced from his new album, and he was kind enough to ask me to sing a duet with him. It is a bit different, from what we at Les Magnifiques Libellules perform, but enjoyable, nonetheless.

So, this has been an eventful weekend, non? My best friend is beaten, I have musical instruments to replace and a fine to pay for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. I suppose I should be terribly grateful I did not end up in jail like some friends of mine did.

I do not pretend to understand this. My roommate was in our flat, in our appropriate district when he was attacked. I have a flat in the right district and was simply out late at a friend's who lived in another. How long is it going to be before the walls go up to keep us in because it is easier than letting us out? I am a musician. I did not hurt anyone. We are artists, students, writers, fathers, mothers, doctors, we are human beings. Not animals.

How much easier would this be if you would let us go home. If you have not found a terrorist yet, America, it is unlikely you are going to just by keeping citizens of foreign countries hostage when they have done nothing wrong. You complain about the difficulties in housing your own people, why keep a large group who do not even wish to be here. This is not our land of the free and home of the brave, it is a land of imprisonment where we are not even afforded the most basic of rights that your own people are supposed to cherish.

Liberté, égalité, fraternité.

I see none of that here.

Vlog: Astrid Lisle [

The camera tilts precariously as it swoops to take in the small, cramped room, with musical instruments and recording equipment in one corner, a small table and chairs, the sofa that Cam gave her, with Jean Paul, still shaved and looking a bit bedraggled from his encounter a few weeks ago with another dog sprawled on it and taking up the entire thing. There are movie credits playing on the television in the background, and then the camera goes to where Lucien is passed out on the bed beside her, in just his jeans, an empty gin bottle beside him.

Suddenly Astrid's face fills the screen and she pulls the camera back. She's wearing a camisole and underpants and nothing else, sitting smoking a cigarette as she regards an I-Holo Disk Box in her hand. - The Princess Bride.

"This movie is so confusing. And that girl, she is tres stupide, no? How could she love this boy so much and not know he was the pirate? And what sort of name is Buttercup? Look, Lucien passed into unconsciousness because of her stupidity!"

The camera goes towards him again. He is snoring and opens his eyes slightly before making a "go away" gesture with his hand and then covering his face with one of the pillows.

"See! C'est vrai!"

Astrid leans in to kiss Lucien on the cheek, then flops down so that her head is pillowed on his stomach, the camera held out at arm's length so you can see her.

"I do not understand what all the fuss is about. Although I think I wish someone to love me like that. Maybe. Someday. Stupidity aside."

Lucien's arm wraps around her and she looks up at him and smiles before the camera suddenly clicks off.

So tell me something honestly as a man. Would you give something expensive to a girl you barely knew? And if so, why?

Who would possibly buy or sell used panties?  I do not even pretend to understand.  Is this some Americanism I am unfamiliar with?

I would rather wear none at all than ones that had been previously worn.

If I may say so, our performance last night at Shockside was one of our best yet.  I am so sorry for those of you who couldn't make it.  And SPORTACUS! He was at his best.  I could listen to him all night.

It almost makes everything worth it, to have found such a good base of fans and comrades here in New York.  Almost.  I still do not like my very small apartment, however.  And I still miss France.

There is a momentary blur and then the camera focuses on Astrid, sitting in a chair in the light from the window of the band's flat.  She is dressed in a black robe and smoking a cigarette as she talks.  In the background you can hear the noise of the street outside and the occasional siren as well as the low woof of a dog when the video starts.  When speaking her accent is heavy and fairly noticeable, and she stumbles slightly at times as she speaks, pausing a bit before continuing.

Astrid smiles at the camera.  "Bonjour, it is I, Astrid, coming to you from the tiny apartment we at Les Magnifiques Libellules like to call home.    I have been sitting here breakfasting and we have been listening to the sounds outside, sirens, I think.  I am not sure if there is an accident or a fire or what, but there seems to be something going on in the building across the way."  The camera pans to the window and then out, where you can see several police vehicles parked in front of a neighboring building.  After a moment it pans back to Astrid.

"But fear not, I have my ... indomitable friend Jean-Paul to protect me as always."  There is a low woof and a large, canine nose pushes at the camera for a moment, wetting it.  The hand holding the camera cleans it with a cloth as Astrid laughs.  "You see, he knows we are talking of him.    He is a smart boy, are you not?"  She pets the dog and takes a drag of her cigarette before continuing.  "In any case, I have good news for fans of the band.  We have finished our new single and will be performing it this weekend at..."  She consults a piece of paper by her side.  "Shockside in District 1 at 9 o'clock on Saturday.   Odds Bodkins will also be playing along with my good friend SPORTACUS.  We always love playing with SPORTACUS, he who was my saviour last week."  At that she touches her cheek.  "And as you can see, we are all healed from that little adventure and ready to embark on a new one, non?"  She looks at someone off camera, presumably Lucien, and laughs as he says something unintelligible in French.

"Oui.  C'est vrai.  Today we have been practicing, Lucien and I, but our dear Andy has been missing in action."  She raises an eyebrow and gets closer to the camara, acting mysterious by putting her finger to her lips and leaning towards the viewer as if she is confiding something.  "I will tell you a secret, my friends... I think our dear Andy is smitten with someone new... She has not been home all day and... it seems that love is in the air.  Perhaps our next song will be a powerful romantic ballad, non?"

"And to finish we will play you a snippet of our new song." She reaches for her bass, stubbing out her cigarette, and then begins to strum a rhythm line. There is no singing, just rough chords, heavily punk with a bit of soul to them, at one point she stumbles on a note, breaking off after a few more with a laugh as Lucien says something else to her. "Ah well, we will practice, non? C'est la vie."

The video abruptly ends with Jean-Paul putting his face in the camera again and then everything going black.

Lucien, Ça va?

Andy, if this is how the Irish celebrate I am thinking perhaps we are better off sticking with Bastille day.
